Kiln carving is a warm-glass technique that creates the appearance of carved or bas-relief patterns in fused glass without actually carving the glass itself.
Prepared for you will be pre-fired base glass pieces, (you can choose a colour beforehand) you will then decide on a design for calving out of the fibre paper using a craft knife. The fibre paper comes in 1, 3 & 6mm thicknesses so you can create some fabulous multi-layered designs, my favourites are the ammonite & sea horses. You can use craft punches (only for the 1mm paper) to add small details.
Once you have cut out all the pieces for your design, they are then laid out onto a kiln shelf and the pre-fired glass placed on top. The kiln is then set to a programme for kiln carving and your work will be ready to collect within approximately 7 days.
Kiln Carving Workshop
No glass cutting but some fabulous effects using fibre paper to embed patterns in the glass.
(it’s as easy as cutting butter!)
